The term, "Community Helpers" refers to the people in our communities who provide services that help keep us safe, healthy, and supported, such as firefighters, doctors, and mail carriers. Many community helper units are designed with younger learners in mind and often use simplified or cute cartoon-style visuals. While these materials work well for younger kids, older learners may benefit from resources that use more realistic images and a more age-appropriate presentation. The free resources below can be combined to create a mini-unit on community helpers that may be better suited for older students.

Introduce the Unit:

One option to start of the unit is this tie-in to trains. You show the picture and read the text about the people waiting for the train. Then, you can do activities for one community helper at a time. It isn't intended to do all of the community helpers in one day, you can work at your own pace over a week or two.

Activity Sequence

I started with this page for each community helper, and then put together a packet for each community helper by printing the corresponding sections from the following activities.
