Math Word Problem Graphic Organizer

A screenshot of the graphic organizer, as described in the paragraphs below.

I created this graphic organizer based on information that I read in this book. I find the book really helpful, and you can read my review of it here: https://www.autismhomeschoolsuccess.com/single-post/2019/05/20/Books-on-Teaching-Students-with-Math-Difficulties

In the book, students are encouraged to monitor and reflect on their comprehension and problem-solving approaches when working on word problems. The book suggests giving students prompts for this, such as:

  • “What is being asked?”

  • “What is necessary to solve this problem?” and

  • “Is my answer reasonable?”

The book also highly recommends the CRA approach (which is a simple teaching process that can be used for almost any skill). Part of this process is to draw a picture representation of math problems, so I have also included spaces for this. You can read more about the CRA approach here: https://www.autismhomeschoolsuccess.com/single-post/2019/06/29/Math-Teaching-Tip-Build-a-Bridge-from-Concrete-to-Abstract-with-the-Concrete%E2%80%93Representational%E2%80%93Abstract-Approach

I've also made a video about the CRA approach:
