Essentials to Special Education Homeschooling (Getting Started)
Homeschooling is the ultimate individualized education plan, so it’s not a wonder why parents of special needs children consider this educational choice. In this talk, Peggy Ployhar, the CEO of SPED Homeschool covers what it takes to get started homeschooling, avoiding and conquering common pitfalls, and how to homeschool special education through high school. This talk is filled with practical advice from the trenches of homeschooling for 16 years and working for over a decade as a special needs homeschooling consultant.
Presenter Information: Peggy Ployhar, SPED Homeschool Founder & CEO, is a leader in the special education homeschooling community and a frequent writer and speaker on special education homeschooling issues. Peggy’s journey into homeschooling started 18 years ago when her oldest child was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome. Peggy is the former THSC (Texas Home School Coalition) Special Needs Team Lead, MACHE (Minnesota Association of Christian Home Educators) Special Needs Coordinator and MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) Area Coordinator for MN, ND and SD. She is certified by the American Association of Christian Counselors and trained as a Precept Bible Study leader. In her free time Peggy enjoys aerial silks, paddle boarding, cooking, hiking and reading. You can tune in every Tuesday evening on the SPED Homeschool Facebook page to watch Peggy host SPED Homeschool Conversations, a weekly talk show about special education homeschooling or you can join her daily on her personal YouTube channel, Daily Revelations. Helping our Students Transition into Adulthood
Whether it's explicit instruction on doing laundry, grocery shopping, and paying bills, or preparing for employment through interviewing skills and appropriate dress, or help with social skills and decision making, parents need a plan to provide their pre-teens and teens with the skills they need to survive adulthood. This workshop outlines how to set up a life skills program with your child using Transition 2 Life and Daily Living Skills.
Presenter Information: Susan Traugh holds a B.A. in Liberal Studies and an M.A. in Education with an emphasis on curriculum. She has taught elementary through college teacher training. But, most importantly, Susan is the mother of three (now grown) children with disabilities, one of whom is on the autism spectrum. As the former president of POSH, (The Partnership of School and Home), Susan saw the need for transition skills in students like her children and a series was born.

Class Connections:
Transitions for Students with Severe and Profound Disabilities
This presentation focuses on transition sections: education/further training, employment, independent living, and community experiences. Although geared to the high school population, everyone can benefit from the information. Participants will learn questions to ask to identify student strengths, preferences, interests, and needs. A variety of assessments to utilize will be discussed. Examples of goals, objectives, and activities will be provided. Although home-schooled students may not be on IEPs, they will benefit from transition activities to prepare for post-secondary options.
Presenter Information: Denise Griffin has been a special education teacher for 26 years. She is a certified transition specialist who works with high school students with severe and profound multiple disabilities.
